I have several avi files with vbr mp3 audio. When converted to mpeg1 with Tmpgenc Plus, I get an m1v file that’s ok, and an mp2 file that does not sound at all. If I extract the mp2 with Ffmpeggui, it’s ok.
I have read the Tmpgenc issues in the forum, and noticed it’s a very common problem when it’s about mp3 vbr audio.
BUT, this had never happened to me before, and I can say I’ve converted hundreds of vbr audio avis, actually. I’m pulling out my hair, really…

It seems you were just lucky for a long time. This is typical VBR problem.
Go to a higher source and get it before it was butchered into VBR.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)
