hello!
i'd like to share with you my experience with a malfunctioning LVW-5001.
it had cooling problems, write errors and poor dvd compatibility
so i tried to fix it
lens cleaning, cooling improvement and internal drive replacement (with a LiteON SOHW-1673s)
if you like i wrote a guide and prepared an image gallery
you can find them here: http://toxie.altervista.org/
i hope it wil help you fixing your 5001 like i did !
good fixing!

I can see what's going on. Pictures work well.

CDfreaks has a simple guide for drive replacement for the 5005 but if you don't care for esthetics, the drive should work on the outside of the case just fine with your power cables and ide header cable running into the case. That would be similar to the hot swap for the HDD I use on my Dishplayer. I've had the case top off for the last 3 years without a problem and it gets rid of the heat build-up which WAS a problem. It's not really a big problem to replace the drive though and the guide's author says it can be done in 5 minutes once you figure out what you're doing...There seem to be a lot of the Liteons with the same problems that if you can fix them, you can get a great deal on used units cheap...as little as 99 cents from Ebay. I just want to fool around with one to see what else you can do with it...
