Why would you store backed up dvds on a spindle. Wouldn't it be hard to find a specific movie that you are looking for if it happens to be somewhere in the center. So you'd have to take out each one to get to the one you want risking that they may get scratched in the process. Sounds dumb to me, but store them how you will. I was talking about 2/3/4/5/6 disc dvd cases for burned dvds, if you weren't sure what I was talking about...

Because it takes up less space and moving a spindle of 100 DVDs is easier than moving 100 slimline jewel cases.

They are numbered/alphabatized so it isn't that hard.

BTW, I don't store everything things on spindles, but I do store most. Those on spindles are things that are accessed infrequently. Things I access frequently are stored in slimline jewel cases.

I'm more worried about scratching an original DVD-Video than scratching a $0.42 16X recordable DVD.

I knew what you were talking about.

I don't deal with those because it isn't worth it for me to spend that much on cases (i.e., those 2/3/4/5/6 disc DVD cases are relatively costly).

And I wouldn't be surprised if the reason you didn't get any responses to your post was because the people here don't use them much either.

    Speak for yourself. :P

I mostly use wallets, but have on occasion used double cases and sextuple cases for special projects. For example, a 3-disc episode DVD boxset backs up nicely to a 6 disc dvd-r set, which is good to have all in the one box with cover art.

I haven't tried enough brands to really compare them, but I always go with Amaray double cases, with a hinged flap for the 2nd disc. Amaray cases are the industry standard and are very sturdy. I use hinged cases just for aesthetic reasons, so that I can still have a printed insert in the box. You could experiment with cheaper brands or 'front and back' cases, but they may be more bendy than you'd like. Your best bet is to find a physical store where you can sample the boxes.

All of the sextuple and beyond cases seem to be the same brand, they are definitely all the same style from what I've seen. The ones I have are fairly cheaply made. When I say cheaply made, I mean things like the plastic is flexible, poorly cut so that there are ugly sharp corners, and sometimes the latches which hold it shut are broken. This isn't on every box, just about 1 in 10. But there is no alternative it seems, if you want 6 discs all in the one box. 6 discs and over also means the box is double width so you have to take that into account too.

The one brand which you should AVOID is 'Scanavo'. These cases have a horrible hub which makes getting the disc off really hard. See

Another tip, avoid overlapping disc cases because they can easily damage the data.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful but at least it's a start, hopefully others can add more to this.

Well, maybe those with half a brain do that. Storing burned discs in spindles is a great way to scratch your discs -- not to mention having to dig through the spindle to find the disc you want. If you're not going to care for your discs, you may as well just throw them out now and get it over with.

Now to get on topic, I don't buy my cases by brand. I do my case shopping at blankmedia.ca and buy whatever cases I need. I mainly use triples and quadruples, which save a lot of space.

how is the quality of the cases from http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=USPlastic&category%5Fname=...uct%5Fid=14055. Are they made of the sturdy harder plastic or the thinner more flexible?

    Denvers Dawgs,

Normally I use dual disk jewel cases, and these for any series of over 4 disks.
I'm at work right now, but will do a comparison with the commercial cases I have, when I get home.

For singles and doubles (with flap for second disk), I use cases from Meritline. They're pretty cheap and decent quality. I have only had a few bad ones out of several hundred. I've seen plenty of Meritline bashing on these boards, but I've gotten nothing but excellent service from them.

For 3-8 disks, I use cases from Effectuality. I really like that their 3 and 4 disk cases are still the same size as a single. The 5-8 cases are about double thickness (maybe a bit more). They seem to be pretty good quality and I don't recall a single defective one. They ship very quickly too. By the way, there is nothing wrong with Effectuality's single or double cases. I just already had plenty of them from Meritline before I discovered Effectuality.

One last question I think. Mawdryn, those 3-8 cases (the ones with the double dvd hinges. Do the dvds ever get scratched on the bottom. It looks like one just looks in right over half of the bottom dvd?

I have purchased many of the multi-disc cases from effecutality.com and am quire pleased with the quality of their products.
but I buy all my double-disc cases at CompUSA because it's right on the way home from work and they carry the slimline double-disc cases.
