I'll try to explain this as eaisly as possible. This is a problem with friends machine so here we go........

He has a NEC 2510 drive in an "e machine" and is burning with nero 6 ultra. When a DVD is burned and reinserted into the drive to play it, it says unreadible disc. If it is then taken to a table top player and viewed on a tv, it plays fine. No sucess with phone calls to tech support. They said that purple dye disc's are the problem?? He has been unable to do a firmware update everytime he tries to update gets an error that states "compatible drive not found" Has used commerical dvd in it and plays fine. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks in advance.

AFAIK, all DVD writeables are 'Purple dye'. I think they mean it won't play a burned disc, just commercial pressed discs.

Unless you really need to play burned discs in the computer, I wouldn't worry that much about it as long as they work properly in the settop players.

But, have you tried to play burned DVDs from other computers?

Two things to try, first, different media, though it doesn't really sound like a media problem.

Try the firmware upgrade. Should be some way to get it to work.

He doesn't need to watch the video on the computer, however if he wanted to make an additional copy of this disc after he already erased it from his hd, he can't read the disc to copy it. That is the main concern. Any ideas on a reliable source for a firmware update for this drive?

  4. Hi cdcox

sounds like a known problem with XP ...

    http://www.nero.com/eng/FAQs_Windows.html#2

    Nero FAQ

    2. Any discs I create using mastering software such as Nero are not readable on any system under Windows XP; not even in the drive they were created in.

This is a known problem with XP that Microsoft is aware of.

The following link will resolve the issue:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q320174
    direct download --> http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Patch/Q320174/WXP/EN-US/Q320174_WXP_SP1_x86_ENU.exe

you will need SP1 to install ...

mial, that MS note appears to refer to CDs, not DVDs. He can read commercial DVDs, just not the ones he burns.

Here are a few more sources for upgrades:

    http://tdb.rpc1.org/

    http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=102787

    http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/25x0.html

    http://herrie.org/firmwares/nec2510.html

Sounds like the upgrade may have to be done in DOS. But I would check first to see if any of these address your problem.

The http://www.cdfreaks.com/ site may a good place for other information.

Try updating to this firmware: http://mdmm.com/drivers/OpticalDrives/8XDVD9_FW_2F9.exe

To flash under windows use BinFlash Win32 GUI v1.29 or newer: http://binflash.cdfreaks.com/#download

I think this is the best stock firmware for NEC 2510 drives

Note: Before you flash check this page for details: http://binflash.cdfreaks.com
