Looking for a new computer to do dvd rip, edit, etc. Which would best and why?

Is a pent D with less ghz faster than a pent 4?
Does the D restrict use of copyrighted material? Thought I heard they were heading that way?

Depends on what you're doing with it really. If you're using an SMP aware encoder/application such as Premiere or TMPGEnc then the Pentium D for certain. In fact I'd probably get the Pentium D out of those choices regardless. I'd easily take that 200 MHz "hit" in clock speed for the extra processor built into the chip.

And why would it matter if it restricted the use of copyrighted material?

it wouldn't matter at all if it did restrict copyrighted material, I was just wondering if it is rumor or fact. Just for my own curiosity. I'd mostly be using for burning tivo files, and editing home movies.....So you think the Pent D...

I haven't heard of that sort of hardware restrictions on anything. Maybe on capture cards and the like but not on a CPU. And yes, the dual-core Intel should make for a very useful processor. Just make sure to build a good system around it.

unfortunately I'm probably going to by another HP. For one I haven't built a computer before, although it does seem like something I'll do in the future, bur right now I'm just to lazy to research on how to build one, and what I need.

Come on, Denver. We'll help you build one. You'll end up with something better than HP.

build your own pc which will be much better than a HP or even a DELL pc. I knew nothing about computers 10 years ago and I've managed to learn how to build one with the help of the internet and forums like this. I'm sure people will be willing to help you out.

  10. Denver,

I hope it's not to late, but don't waste your time with an over the counter PC. Listen to what folks say, you'll have such a more stable and faster computer if you do it yourself. It truly is incredibly easy.

I sometimes use my work PC for encoding and it's an HP 3.2 ghz. My 3.0 ghz PC I built at home encodes faster because it's an overall better and higher quality built computer.

Here's some brand names to get you started.

    Motherboard - Asus or Abit
    Memory - Kingston, Crucial
    Hard drives - Western Digital
    DVD burner - NEC
    Video Card - ATI, Nvidia
Case - Cooler Master, Lian Li

You can get everything here, www.zipzoomfly.com they have free 2 day shipping.

I would also go with the dual core cpu, I myself and going to build a dual core AMD next time instead of Pentium.

I do have a Pentium D computer here at work that just came in, HP also and I'm going to fool with it today and encode some stuff to see how quick it actually is. One thing that I noticed is the dual cores are not hyper threaded, at least this one. I was kinda expecting to see 4 cpus but no. Of course I'll take a real cpu over a virtual one anyday.

  11. Well, TMPGenc 3.0 doesn't take full advantage of dual CPU's. I thought that it did but nope.

I encoded the same 45 minute movie file on both HP's I have here at work. A P4 3.2 ghz and then the new PD 2.8 ghz and the 3.2 was actually 5 minutes faster.
