I have several DVDs in NTSC format. I would like to convert them to PAL and was wondering if I can convert the VOB files directly, or would I have to encode to Xvid / Divx and then back again.

I wish to maintain the quality of the DVDs and also preserve the menus so this is why I want to know if I can convert the VOB files directly. If so, which program would be able to do this.

I would prefer not to have answers saying "Get a player that plays NTSC" because I have got one already. I just want to know if it's possible for future reference.

Thanks to all who offer help.

If all you want to do is play them, don't bother. ALL European DVD players will play NTSC discs and the quality will be better than any conversion.

Short answer: No, it is not possible with good results.

This easiest / fastest way to convert NTSC DVDs to PAL is playback the NTSC DVD as PAL on a DVD standalone capable to do this convertion on the fly, and capture - the analogue tradition way, the output to PAL

The hard way is to rip DVD, inverce telecine the vobs to 23.97, seperate audio / video, boost audio to 25fps, resize to PAL and boost the video to PAL, encode the new combo to a new mpeg 2
