Also I no longer succeeed in registring each time I launch it again asks for registring

Keep ffmpegX in the Applications folder and not a separate folder. Make sure the /Library/Application Support/ffmpegX folder exists and that it is written ffmpegX and not ffmpegx. Try to set text encoding to "English" in your International system prefs.

just wanted to say thanks for those who suggested fix to tiger install problem (ie make the directory yourself). that got me past that initial error message.
NOW about 5 seconds after hitting install, the files seem to be found but I am getting an error saying:
Installation was not successful
##/bin/sh: line 1: cd: /usr/local/share: No such file or directory
any ideas?
mplayer for example seems to be installed (I can play a video) but get the error nonetheless..

You must create 3 directories.
1. /Library/Application Support/ffmpegX
2. /usr/local
3. /usr/local/share
1. May be easily created in Finder. To create 2. and 3. you may need Terminal.app (as they are hidden directories) and use the following commands
sudo mkdir /usr/local (enter your login password blindly and hit return)
sudo mkdir /usr/local/share

major, i followed your instructions and got ffmpegX installed. however, every time i start the app again, i see the installer pane again asking me to install mencoder. when i open up the ffmpegX ƒ in application support, there is:
gocr
gocrfilter_en.sed
gocrfilter_fr.sed
gocrfilter_nl.sed
gocrfilter_none.sed
mencoder
mp2enc
mpeg2enc
mplayer
subtitle2pgm
tcextract
vcdxbuild
vcdxgen
yuvdenoise
yuvscaler

Hi, I'm a brand new mac user and have been struggling trying to get some avi files converted so I could burn them to dvd.
I installed the ffmpegX and immediately got the messages everyone else has posted. I tried creating my own directories but am still getting the no such directory or file message for the last two items. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. (and seeing that I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, I'm positive it's something I'm doing wrong!) Where do you create the directories?
Thanks in advance.

Sometime yesterday, major had a post that said he was working on the documentation and would be done by the end of the day. But he deleted it...
major, if I were you, I'd be more embarrassed by the posts two months ago that said you were a week away from releasing 0.0.9t. Why even give status reports if you're just going to break your promises and throw your embarrassing posts down the memory hole?

I didn't delete that post at all. In general, questions about when a release will be ready are nonsensical, as the future cannot be predicted. I however answer with my best estimate at the moment I give it. Currently, the delay comes from sleeping needs associated with numerous changes to the online documentation, but everything is quite ready now.
