It doesnt let me record my old vhs tapes from the 80s to dvd because it says theyre copyrighted, is there anyway around this?

You didn't mention if your VHS tapes were store-bought tapes or tapes that you recorded yourself. If they are store-bought commercial tapes then it is likely that they used Macrovision when making the tape. The DVD recorder will refuse to copy them.
