Can you burn a dvd directly with a dvd burner or do you need to extract it to your hard drive and then burn it.

    Will either of these work...

  2. Maybe, if the original is unencrypted or just data.

If the original is encrypted you'll have to decrypt it first, which means you'll have to copy to your HD. But if the orignal is dual layer more drastic measures will be needed.

As far as I know, it completely pointless to burn a DVD right now. First off, you can't just pop in a dvd and hit copy. It ain't that easy. First you have to copy the .vob files to your hard drive(10+ GB in size.) Then you have to reauthor it using a program and burn it onto a DVD blank disc.

Second, a(one, uno, un) blank DVD disc is $20+. You can buy a DVD movie for $13-$25. Is it really worth it? Not really...

  4. Well, not completely pointless. But not completely practical either.

The days of $20 blanks are behind us (unless you shop at Best Buy?). Blanks can be had for about $3, and even the Pioneer media goes for about $10. But 1 to 1 copies are only possible if the original is a single layer disc or a flipper disc. Since those are in the minority, and most of the ones out there sell to $10-$15 anyway, it's not really practical considering the time involved.
Especially once you consider that compatability with consumer DVD players is not really there yet.
