Woman arrested after police find 67 dead cats in freezer

A Florida woman has been arrested after police found dozens of dead cats in her freezer.

Officers searched Audrey Weed's house after neighbours complained about the smell.

They found 67 dead cats and dozens of other neglected animals.

Weed, of Cooper City, is a former police officer. She is a volunteer for a local animal rescue group.

The 50-year-old has been charged with 92 counts of animal neglect, reports the Miami Herald.

A total of 31 kittens and 36 cats were found in her fridge and freezer, some of them in plastic bags.

Another 24 cats and one dog were found alive in the house.

Police are not sure why the cats had been kept frozen. It's believed Weed offered to take in abandoned pets, but could not cope.

Neighbour, Xinia Shust, said: "You cannot walk in front of this house without gagging. She's a nice woman, but she became too involved.''

Doreen Gries, a volunteer with the Pets in Distress rescue group, said: "Her heart got too big. Audrey has done this on her own. She picked up a lot of the pets on her own. She was trying to do the right thing.''

Weed is a former police animal control officer. She once wrestled and captured an alligator.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but since when was keeping your cat in the freezer the right thing?? It sure as hell doesn't taste half as good as turkey

I think this is so wrong in many ways, but would it have been OK if she had been eating them?
