  1. Hi! I'm looking for a player that can play both PAL and NTSC DVD's on a NTSC Television. I have a few questions too.
1- I heard that the conversion is really bad and there's a lot of quality loss. Is it true??
2- I heard there are several types of DVD player that make the conversion (8 mb, 12 mb, 16 mb). Which one is the best??
3- Finally...which player should I buy?? Can you suggest me a few models??

    Thanks a lot!!

  2. Mine is a bit old, but does a very good job of PAL->NTSC. It's a JVC XV-N30BK. Doesn't play DivX or anything like that, but has taken every kind of media I've thrown at it except for DVD-RW (only tried Pengo, so maybe it would take something else). VCD, SVCD, DVD-R, DVD+R, and DVD+RW (various brands) have all been a go so far. Has optical, component, and coax outputs (as well as standard RCA A/V) and supports both DTS (still need a decoder) and MP2 audio.

May not be the latest and greatest, but might give you an idea of what to look at.

I do conversions from PAL to NTSC but i have had a Cyberhome CH-DVD300 that i bought for my daughter over 2 years ago and it works great for playing any region and PAL dvd's!!
I just picked up a second one at BestBuy last week for $40.00 + tax - $15.00 rebate, $25.00 basically!!

Dont know if that helps seeing as you have absolutely nothing filled out in your profile though 8) and we dont know where you are
Well, i would assume you are in the U.S. as you stated on a NTSC Television. but that is still not a for sure assumption.
Sometimes the more expensive DVD player does not come close to the quality of a cheaper player

Some players, like the Philips DVP-642, simply throw away the excess lines so they are basically displaying a 720x576 video as 720x480 by throwing away 96 lines of resolution. This won't be noticable if you have letterboxed video, but on full screen video, it may be VERY noticeable I have read that very very few players can correctly convert PAL progressive DVDs to NTSC progressive video and the DVP-642 can't do this either.

I have no idea at all what you are trying to say in number 2 of your post.

A lot of DVD players can convert PAL to NTSC, but it depends on how much you want to spend and how picky you are about quality. I think the DVP-642 has nice quality video output and it's cheap, but I have read posts where some guys insist it has the worst video output on the planet of any DVD player. You might want to go to a store and look at displays and see what you like.
