  1. Hi All.

I have moved my desktop for Windows to Linux and previously I used Nero Recoder to convert from xVid to MP4. Is there an similar program on Linux that will do this type of conversion. The reason for needing this conversion is that my Epson P2000 will not player xVid MPEG4, but it will play MP4 files like the ones created by Nero Recoder, I'm not even sure on what the format is. I have tried FFMPEG, but the MP4 files it creates don't seem to work. Any suggestions?

    Best Regards

    Andrew.

  2. Sorry this isnt a true answer, but have you thought about having a dualboot system? Partition your hard drive so you can have:

    C: -WinXP
    D: -Linux
E: -Your Files, movies, music etc to share between WinXP and Linux.

Then you have the benefits of both XP and your Linux distro... if you want more info jusk ask or search Google.

  3. I already have it configured to dual-boot, but I wanted that to only be temporary whilst I make the transistion from Windows to Linux. Also it is a pain in the ass to reboot just to convert a file. Must be a better way!!!

If your source files are avi, then just use mp4box or mp4creator to remux to mp4. No need to re-encode, well at least not the video. If the audio isn't mp3 or aac then it would need re-encoding.

If the file uses bframes then you would need to use avi2raw before mp4creator. mp4box should be fine either way.

    ffmpeg's mp4 output I don't think is 100% spec compliant.

You can convert to MPEG4/MOV. This works fine with the P-2000 and ffmpegx. Be sure to use a constant Audio Bitrate.

You can use options like "high quality", "4 Motion-Vectors", "Two-Pass Coding" and "Trellis-whatsitsname". Works fine too, although i don't know, what it means...

P-2000 does not seem to like b-frames or quarterpixels.
