Why do old B&W movies contradict the desired filesize (of 700Mb = 1CD) on a 2-pass VDub compression (from DV type I to MPEG-4 AVI)? I recently tried to get the 1hr 36mins of Jailhouse Rock into 700Mb - but VDub 'could not do it for less than 817Mb'?!?!?!? Had it been colour, it wd have fitted at 600Mb! Is there a special setting for B&W processing? Or a noise-reduction filter (as I suspect old movies have higher noise levels, and so make file-sizes a tad hit & miss).

Try the Shadow Smoother Plugin. It only affects the very dark areas, and should provide enough noise reduction and smoothing to reduce your file size.
