What kind of file quality are you starting with? If you save it as 'uncompressed' it will be huge, no matter what the input. You need to size your output in line with your input quality.

VD can use a great many codecs. What do you want to do with the file after it's processed? Huffy is one good low loss codec, a little lower, but more compact is PicVideo, then Divx or Xvid. It's all in the encoder settings as far as quality.

Any time you re-encode, you will lose some quality. How much you can tolerate depends on what you want to do with the video and the settings you use.

Download and install the Panasonic DV Codec.

Load the AVI into VirtualDub, Video -> Compression -> Select Panasonic DV Codec. Then Video - Use Full Processing Mode, and then File -> Save AVI.

This is because Premiere is primarily geared to working with DV AVI.

Also, irrespective of source, you're unlikely to notice any quality loss (not saying that there won't be any though).

More info on the source file would be useful here. Post a screen print from GSpot of the file...

  7. DV codecs requires 720x480 (NTSC) or 720x576 (PAL).
