  1. Hi all,

I'm currently looking for a a capturing/editing program to rip video off of DV camcorder to the laptop. The catch is, I need to have this video in MP4 ISO standard format and I need to get a very easy to use interface.

I've looked at Pinnacle, Adobe Premiere Elements, Windows Movie maker, Roxio suite package. None of them are able to capture video directly to MP4, except for the Pinnacle studio, but I do not think Pinnacle uses the ISO standard MP4.

The next product I am looking at is Ulead's VideoStudio software package with the MP4 plugin. Any thoughts on this product??

Thanks ahead of time for all the help

video studio is very basic, and since u said u want a really easy interface, then why don't u go ahead with it...since it's got the plugin ur looking for.

question: why do u need to CAPTURE in MP4?

I do not think you have enough CPU to do on the fly DV avi to MP4. What you want to do is very CPU intensive, which will result in a lot of dropped frames.

  4. Thanks for the initial responses...

I need to capture in MP4 due to the fact that the video is going on a Cisco IPTV server and they are VERY picky as to the type of MP4 files on it.

At first I thought Pinnacle Video 9 was going to be perfect for what I needed. It captured the video and outputted it into an MP4 and I was able to view it fine. But, when I loaded it on to the IPTV server, it just crashed the server. (I think that's due the MP4 codec used)

That's why I'm skeptical of Ulead's Video Studio and was wondering if anyone here would know the type of MP4 codec it uses and if it's different from the one that Pinnacle uses.

I've been able to create MP4 programs via DV, but I've always needed to use Quicktime Pro as a go between, by creating the video into a DV-AVI file, which is HUGE (20 minutes was like 6 GB) I'm just trying to see if there is a program out there that can do it all.

    Thanks again for the responses.

  6. Thanks for that note about the containers - I'm still very new to this stuff.

Anyways, I defintely think the video codec being used is my problem. Of the programs I've tried the ONLY encoder that worked is Quicktime 6.5 on windows, and I think that's the codec I need. I also tried using QT7 on OS X and that crashed the server. I just read that Apple used the H264 codec on QT 7.

This is what I just copied from Apple's Website.
"QuickTime 6 led the way for ISO-compliant MPEG-4, 3GPP and 3GPP2. And now QuickTime 7 with H.264 video once again leads the industry."

I need to find programs that used this ISO-compliant MPEG-4 similar to what QT6.5 used. Does anyone happen to know specifically what this MPEG-4 codec is called?
