I have a corrupt WMP-9 in a W2K boot partition, and, rather than trying to fix it, I thought this might be an opportunity to just get rid of it and try out 6.4 Classic instead. (I did look up the write-up in the Tools section, and did a quick topic search here, before posting.)
Some tech advice I've received indicates that it is rather inadvisable to attempt to uninstall the WMP that is already there in the OS. Also some advice to the effect that even if it turns out that 6.4 was beefed up in certain ways to give it latter day playback functionality, *most* of the version changes have been security related, to stop hacker exploits. If that is correct, WHY should we be interested in WMP Classic ? Just to turn back the clock on the UI ? (To something circa W98 ?) To reduce Code Bloat . . . which is pretty much a given these days, especially in the MS way of doing things ?
OTOH, some MPC user comments said that it doesn't need to be installed, just a shortcut on the desktop to the executable. In that case, it should be low-risk to try out, if the security thing is not a major concern.

Yes, there's no installation per se, rater just putting the exe somewhere and run it.
Default WMP is a pain to get rid of, but if you can, good riddance! If recent wmp releases have addressed security issues, completely removing the damned thing is the best security measure you can take!

Media Player Classic Classic? That's like ATM machine = Automatic Teller Machine Machine and Personal Identification Number Number.
I have always just placed mplayerc.exe in programs files\windows media player, next to mplayer2.exe.
If you are worried about security then you can always deny mpc network access.
