i was just wondering if writing a 16x dvd-r at 8x is better than writing a 8x dvd-r at 8x. both speeds of media are nearly the same price and I plan to write at 8x anyway.

No. Good media should be good at it's rated speed.

Eventually it'll be a moot point as 8x media is slowly but surely on its way out. I agree with LS about speeds though, if the media is quality and the burner has a good write strategy for it, no need to lower the speed below the disc's certified speed.

ok, thanks 4 the answers but, i would have thought that 16x media has 2 b better quality than 8x media because it has been made 2 b written at a higher speed, is this not true?

I agree with the above comments, but would like to add that it would only be true if one's computer is capable of writing at 16x without trouble.

In this case, 8x would be the better choice (if fixing the system is not an option).

Just a side note...burning media at drastically under it's rated speed, may actually do just the opposite, and significantly effect the quality of the burn in a negative way.

I did some tests of MCC02RG20 at 6x on my various burners today, and the results in terms of PIE levels were often higher than when burned at their rated speed of 8x. I found it rather odd, as 8x@6x usually produces some pretty nice results.

    Especially on 16x media.
