I have a Sony TRV310 cam, Studio DV firewire, running win XP.
I tried the following: Using MGI Videowave 4 I captured my home movie, Using Nero 5.5.6.4 with the SVCD MPEG2 plugin I buned a CD. The quality was not what I expected, watching from the TV using the Sony was many times better. I also tried using Windows Movie Maker under different capture formats but the result is the same.
What can I do to improve the quality of the SVCD?

Try using TMPGEnc to encode to MPEG for SVCD. Much better quality and more options than Nero. Then you can use freeware VCDEasy with CDRDAO to author and burn your SVCD.
Don't know much about Windows Movie Maker but I thought it is only for .WMV files and not VCD or SVCD. -

Until we all get DVD burners, the SVCD will not look as good as DV, far less data per frame. Until then, if your DVD player supports SVCD try that. It really works pretty well with DV. If it supports XSVCD, try a 352 x 480 frame size.
