It would really depend on the brand of dvd media that you'll be using. For me using the latest firmware B7V9 on 2 of my BENQ 1620's is what works for me with the brands of dvd media that I use which are DVD+R media MAXELL (made in japan) media code MAXELL 002, VERBATIM (made in taiwan) media code MCC 003, FUJI (made in japan) media code YUDEN000T02 (TAIYO YUDEN) and for DVD-R media I use MAXELL 8x (made in japan) media code MXL RG03. My other 1620 I'm using B7T9.

I would suggest you check out the BENQ FORUMS at CdFreaks.com for more information. I just built 2 computers and both of those BENQ 1620 drives worked well with firmware B7T9, one was retail drive and the other was OEM. By doing quality scans with CD/DVD SPEED the burns were better compared to using any other firmware. You'll find at the BENQ FORUM members there use different firmware for different dvd media. Some even flash the drives back and forth with different firmwares to use with different dvd media. Confusing yet? Check out the BENQ FORUM where members there will help you out.
