Families once again will be able to watch television together in the same room as the result of the invention of a new TV screen unveiled Thursday by the Japanese electronics firm Sharp. The "dual-view LCD" can clearly display two pictures, one for people sitting on the left of the screen, the other for people on the right. Alternately, one side of the screen could display a Web browser or a videogame. Similarly, if mounted in a car, the screen could display a GPS mat to a driver and a movie to a passenger. Sharp says it plans to begin marketing the screen by the end of the year.

i think you will find these are the first generation 3D TVs (without glasses) for straight on viewing -- because that is how it works -- but only for one spot ...

I'm sure there's the possiblity to have both sides project the same image so you can watch it from any angle .

A very interesting product, but alas, like mentioned above there would be the issue with how the audio works...

Fathers are often forced to watch baseball games or other programs they want to see on a small television set in the bedroom or elsewhere in the house while children occupy the large screen in the living room, she said. (http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20050714/od_afp/afplifestylejapanitsharpcompany_050714114737)
I guess the fight will move from which TV to who gets the pleasure of listening to the TV with headphones...

I wonder, does the TV come with a free mirror?

To understand this set you need to appreciate the typical Japanese urban condo where all share a single main room. Separate bedrooms are rare ... hence the love hotels for privacy.

I was mainly just refering to the audio out portion of the TV. But yeah, I can see how that would make live easier.

Sharp announced today a dual view LCD display we reported about earlier. Sharp also announced a more useful application of the display for mobile devices.

The dual view display can be configured to only allow owners of a PDA for instance to see what is on the screen when looking at it straight. Bystanders would see something else. As it is configurable what the is displayed from an angle this could be fun. The screen could say "If you can read this, you are to close", like those car bumper stickers.

The privacy angle display also can find applications in ATMs or other terminals that display personal information.

  14. About the audio; the technology exists to have audio in 1 specific direction, a focused audio beam. I did a quick search on it there's a little info on it here: http://www.propagandamatrix.com/audios_the_next_big_thing.htm

Wether it's ready to be commercialised, that's another matter.
