I would like to create a menu template to use for my DVDs as follows:
I want 1 medium sized square box like a thumbnail to place a moving video. And along the side of the box i would like my chapter links. I do not want the motion thumbnail as a button and it should be non navigatable item.
How do i do this?

Try this...
1. Drag and drop the clip you wish to be an unnavigable button directly from the library to the screen and then add your chapter links;
2. Click the FINISH step button;
3. Ignore the PROJECT DETAILS CHECK pop-up message that may advise you that "lost menu links" may be found;
4. Click the CLOSE button;
5. Test playback using the software DVD player.

Another question though, can i use a motion thumbnail chapter point to loop every 10 seconds or will that act like a button?
Hope that makes sense. -
You can click the CREATE MENU - BLANK button and then simply drag and drop your video - while the BUTTON tab is selected - from the library to the blank screen to create your own thumbnail.
Or you can click the CREATE MENU - TEMPLATE button and then - while the BUTTON tab is selected - drag and drop your video onto an existing empty thumbnail.
Then you can use your mouse to re-size the thumbnail.

Also i haven't tried this but can i now use elementary streams in ulead v2 as i did in the past multiplex my AC3 5.1 and m2v using TPMPGEnc then import into ulead this way it wouldn't re-encode my audio to 2 channels.
This has been ok in the past but now i am experiencing sync issues, i check my muliplexed streams in powerdvd and they are perfectly in sync but when i author in ulead and check again it gets out of sync half way through now im not sure if the header is to blame. The m2v stream was encoded as 23.98 FPS but after i multiplex in TPMPEnc i think this re-writes the header as 29.97FPS which might be causing problems in ulead i have also noticed jerky playback after authoring on some scenes.
So i was thinking of using my elementary streams straight into Ulead and see how that turns out. Has anyone else experienced these problems? -
When I tried this method, no link to the thumbnail was established.
In other words, it did not behave as a button.
It instead looked like a motion button - without the functionality.

I suspect that if one begins with 23.98 fps source material, then one may experience the kinds of issues you described.
I suspect Ulead DVD Workshop 2.0 is not designed for such material.

Or is 23.98 fps not the same as 24fps Film Mode?? -
I just looked through the PDF files listing the full features for Ulead DVD Workshop 2.0:
http://www.ulead.com/dws/dws2_features.pdf
I didn't find any mention of "import and retain 24fps film mode."
I also looked through the items listed on the initial press release:
http://www.ulead.com/aboutulead/press/pr11-05-03.htm
I still didn't see the feature you mention below.
May I ask where you read that?
You may be correct, but - so far - I don't see where that feature is listed.

Another thing I'm curious about is if it worked properly before installing the update. I just can't recall if I ever tried using any 23.976fps material with it before the update. But I never had this happen before the update.
If someone knows a way to fix this (without re-encoding) I would be elated. I like this programme because it's quick and makes decent menus without having to create everything in photoshop first (like maestro---although maestro is really cool for fancy menus). Also you don't have to demux everything either. -
What version of Ulead DVD Workshop are you using, and what are you using to encode your 23.976 fps files? I routinely use DVD Workshop 2.0 with 23.976 fps files encoded with TMPGEnc Xpress 3.0.4.24, and it works fine.

to do that special menu you want (as i did something similar a long time ago). All you have to do is after your dvd is done (ulead making the folder on your hard drive), use an app like menu edit (or i think pgcedit can do this as well) and open up the menu in one of those apps and disable the button. Now your clip will play without any highlight/being able to select it and it will just pass over it as if their was never a button there to begin with

-> On the Menu page, choose the Menu tab (1).
-> From the Video - General drop-down menu (2), import your video by clicking the little folder icon.
-> Drag your video from the Library it now appears in to your menu. (3)
-> Change the drop-down menu (2) to Image - General, then drag your background still image to the menu. The video disappears from your menu, but the audio remains. This will allow the menu to play the audio from your video while having a still image background. Don't forget to choose Audio Duration from the drop-down list for Menu duration.
-> Now click on the Button tab (1). Drag your video once again from the Video - General Library (2) to your menu. It will show up in a small rectangular screen whose size and position you can adjust and for which you can choose a frame (I chose a star frame here). Notice that there is nothing in the Playlist for it because it is not a link, just a little video that plays next to the text links beside it on the menu. The audio is there too in this case because of what we did earlier.
