    Guys,

I have a question. I work at a Radioshack and we just got the new Philips DVP3500 models in. Being the curious individual that I am, I cracked open one to see what makes it tick. It has a Mediatek MT1389QE chipset on the board. I was under the impression that the MT1389 series chips allowed for DivX/XviD playback. This model doesn't seem to. Also, the MT1389QE seems to be a newer version of the chip.

Does anyone have any info? Does anyone think loading a different model's firmware would allow for DivX/XviD playback? Is this crazy talk? Inquiring minds want to know.

Incidentally, I plan on experimenting on a unit this Friday. Feel free to contribute ideas.

  2. What did you find out?

It concerns me to hear that it failed on DivX/XviD playback, because I'm in the market for a player, and I was under the impression that I could decide on a player based on the chipset. According to this thread: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=95401

the Mediatek MT1389xx is supposed to handle DivX/XviD. But it doesn't in your case??

Doesn't appear to in this case. I even called Philips and got a tech on the line. They said it never had and never would. Granted, the tech had never heard of Mediatek and couldn't tell me anything about chipsets.

I haven't been able to find anything at all about the MT1389QE chipset online. This may be the first DVD player it's gone into.

The MT1389QE chip is also found in my budget DVD-player, United DVD 6055 (a budget brand mostly for parts of Europe). Sold in electronic shops and in all kind of supermarkets.
It is not supposed to support divx at the box or manual, and it will not read my divx disc. -I had to try divx on it after reading this page!

I am not an expert on this, but I have never heard that the same video chipset automatically will take the same formats on every player.
I do believe that the firmware decide what to play or not.
Maybe a firmware hack can fix it to play divx?
The factory behind the United brand is unknown for me /

And, yes, my english is not perfect.....

Please I want to hear from you again, about this chipset.

Well, I've pretty much given up on the player. I'm no expert in hacking firmware and haven't had much luck in loading other types of firware onto the player. Maybe someone will make a break through, but I fear it will not be me. Sorry.
