    1. mkv,mp4,ogm supports most of the avi features. mkv and mp4 also supports chapters, variable framerate, subtitles, more video and audio formats. ogm also supports chapters and ogg audio.

avi container: outdated container developed by Microsoft. The .divx container is based on it though. Regular avi's can support embeded subs and multiple audio streams. DXN added their own sub format, as well as chapter and menu support,

matroska: free opensource container developed by a group of people to try and fill the gaps left by formats like avi. Basically it can do anything that avi can plus a lot more.

ogm: an extension of the ogg container not supported by Xiph. It was developed by Tobias some years ago and development has basically ceased since then. It supports any video that avi supports plus chapters, subs and vorbis audio. AC3, mp3, aac, etc. audio can also be used.

MP4 nero digital: same as regular ISO mp4, the official mp4 container. Can contain any MPEG4 video such as XviD, DivX x264, etc. along with mp3 or aac audio. Can also contain other streams like vorbis as private streams and still be 100% standards compliant. The data will just be ignored if it isn't supported. This is how Nero stores subtitles. mp4 also supports the ttext text subtitle format, advanced menus, etc.

avi supports DivX, XviD, etc. with some hacks for brames and VBR audio.

mkv supports DivX, XviD, etc. and any other VfW codec via a VfW compatibility mode. Native mpeg4 support I don't think ever worked properly, however native support for AVC works fine. Real Video, Windows Media, etc. are also supported.

As I said ogm supports any video that avi supports.

mp4 supports any MPEG4 video, doesn't matter if it is DivX, XviD or what. No destinction is made.

DivX players support avi and divx containers. Some also offer limited mp4 support.

    4. You should use the divx container although and avi with multiple audio streams and external subs should work fine.

    5. If you chose avi output, then you get avi output

Since MKV and OGM are relatively new containers, DivX players don't seem to support this format yet. Fingers crossed for the the future though.

Ogm is about 5-6 years old now. I wouldn't exactly call that new.

It has been from memory a little over 2 years since the first mkv alpha release. However the specs of MCF (precursor of mkv) were being descussed way back when the first public ogm filters were released.

... first OGM alpha DShow filter to create and read OGM files were released end of 2001, so OGM is right about 4 years old.

Right ! matroska was publically released with the first alpha tools and DShow filters May 1st 2003, but MCF development started end of 1999, so actually before OGM was born.

I thought the first ogm release was the end of 2000 or 1999? Then again I often don't know (or care) what month it is.
