i am going to order a new 40 gb hardd rive and some memory from buy.com and am wondering something. I am going to order tomorrow and the Seagate Barracuda drive is on back order and i really dont want to wait. They have a 40gb Western Digital drive and for about the same price. Is one better than the other for Video recording and editing of pretty large files ( about 500-1gb sometimes )? They are both 7200 rpm. Thanks for any help.

  2. People have reported bad things with Wetern Digital drives... there's no real difference in performance but Seagate are the grand masters of drive manufacture.

    Makes interesting reading.

  4. There were reports a while back of failures more commonly with western digital... These haven't been around in a while.

My personal feelings (mainly from what I overhear, but also my experience)...

    Seagate: Good
    Western Digital: Good
    Maxtor: Not as good

I have a WD 45 GB drive, 5400 RPM, and it seems to work fairly reliably... knock on wood... I've been using it pretty intensively for a year now, seems solid... (also easy to set up, with their utility).

    Hope that helps...
