I'm very new to video editing. I recently tried Ulead's product, and I didn't care for it. Lots of errors and problems with the software. I've done some reading on Vegas Movie Studio +DVD and so far I think this may be what I'm looking for. It seems like a good beginner package that is solid without lots of bugs. My question is this. I downloaded the trial, but it doesn't contain the ability to burn to DVD. It's as if it's Vegas Movie Studio, minus the +DVD. Hope that makes sense.

    Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks!

ULead Video Studio is good at many things. It may not be the best for the beginner. All the basics are there.

I use it mainly for its real time encoding enhancements to the Mainconcept MPeg2 encoder and for quick MPeg2 editing in support of PVR.

For DV project work I mostly use Vegas 6 +DVD, Premiere 6.5 and Pro (different machines) and TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6.

Approaching it from the viewpoint of the beginner I'd say that "best" depends entirely on what you want to do. That is why I use different programs for different goals.

If you haven't thought it through, best to just start with one program, like Movie Studio. Then discover its limits and seek something better.

The reason so many video suites exist is the public usually can't define their needs. They just pick one and learn.

I've read quite a few reviews, including some on Amazon today and it seems like the Pinnacle product and Ulead have many issues, buggy. I believe for a beginner that Vegas Movie Studio will offer everything that some of the other packages do, but less buggy. The interface for the Ulead product seems klunky, plus I was receiving many errors on the trial. I realize it's a trial, but how can they expect to sell their product if the trial version isn't solid..?

Vegas is cool. You can learn the basics pretty fast, and it is a stable application. All of these video apps have pluses and minuses - Vegas is picky about the file formats it will import. Nonetheless, I like the app a lot.

I'm sold on Vegas, I can't speak to the Movie Studio version from experience.

I would expect it to be great for camcorder to DVD work. It may be more limited for off air recording and dealing with multiple formats judging by its big brother.

Still have one question that I'm hoping to get help with. I'm using the trial version of Vegas Movie Studio +DVD, but there is no option for saving to DVD, only CD and file on hard drive. For now I'm working on a movie to learn the program, but I'd like to burn a scratch DVD at some point soon. Is there another place to download the trial because the only trial available that I could find on the Sony site is the one I have. Thanks!!
