  1. Is there a codec I can install on an ordinary Windows XP machine to be able to view Matrox I-Frames movies I made at work?

I exported some videos in both DV and Matrox I-Frame format (knowing I can read DV files for sure) so I would have versions in both formats. Though DV files seemed to work on my home computer with Premiere in the past, these new DV files have some distortion (the blue is sort of bleeding a little...strange).

I quit the job where I made these videos, and I guess I'm now left with my Matrox I-Frames versions only (unless someone can help me figure out what's wrong with the DV versions). Is there a way I can load the I-Frames versions into Premiere on my regular Windows computer and use them? Or will I have to find a friend with a Matrox?

You mean Matrox's I frame only MPEG codec? ffdshow may be able to handle decoding it.

  3. Hmmm...stupid question maybe, but how do I actually load a video into that? All I get is the configuaration menu...it doesn't seem to have a place to load a video into it for processing....

You don't. ffdshow is a dshow decoder/encoder and VfW decoder/encoder. You simply use something that uses dshow or VfW as an interface and it loads ffdshow.

  6. Oh I see. Actually ffdshow couldn't handle it, but I found an actual set of Matrox codecs so now it works in some applications (VirtualDub, VideoStudio), but not others (Premiere, Vegas). Maybe Premiere/Vegas don't bother with codecs that didn't come with them *shrugs*

Premiere/Vegas need special codecs. The better Matrox cards came with Premiere and the proper RT filters/codecs you need.

You use your Matrox hardware card. It should be "obvious to the casual observer" as my boy wonder Physics Prof took pride in rubbing in.

dont need the matrox hardware card to play matrox various codecs - they have all as software free codecs for people without the cards

you found the answer i see ....

anyway - nothing really special about all I frame mpeg - can be played by any mpeg app - but when used in vegas - must be a program stream
