I have no problem to transfer DV from camcorder to PC via firewire card. But when I tried the DV passthru option to backup VHS tape, it didn't work. I can preview video from analog VCR on the camcorder LCD screen and I have done everything according to the user manual:
    cables connected
    set the power to VCR
set A/V to DV OUT to ON

But I cannot preview the passthru DV video on my computer (using Vegas for transfering and capturing) and when I press the software capture button, it starts to transfer video from camcorder's cassette.

Am I doing something wrong, or is there an additional step in settings which I have to do?
    Thank you for your help.

    As said numerous times ...
Turn off device control in Vegas or other capture programs.

No I won't tell you which menu yet again.

    Ah, no not at all.
Thanks again for the tip - it works.
The option to disable device control in Vegas capture window is in Options - Preferences, if someone else would need it.

to Jeremiah58, did you try removing the tape from the camcorder? You are on AV-to-DV out passthrough mode; that tape has no business there. I don't know about Vegas, but in Premiere Pro, using a similar camcorder (TRV350K) I am able to press record and it captures the VHS tape.
For the nth time, with the possible exception of certain Intel processors, I don't have/ever owned anything whose name starts with "i".

Yes turk690, I tried that first, but it didn't help, nor in Vegas nor in Sony Image Mixer software which reported that cassette is not in the camcorder. I do not have Premiere Pro.
But the tip from edDV solved that slight problem.

The solution differs by camcorder and capture program.

The basic problem is capture software expects to communicate with the DV camcorder device unless told not to. When capturing a tape (the default) everythig works great.

Some camcorders "emulate" machine control commands when in Pass-Thru mode, most others never thought the problem through and fail to respond forcing the capture program into error mode. Evidently the software writers were never told about Pass-Thru mode, neither the camcorder manufacturer nor the capture program writers. "Nobody told me therefore it is not my job".

These are the kinds of problems that you would expect to be corrected during beta testing but although (delete comment on beta testing quality) may id the problem, it may take several update revisions before the user screams become loud enough for the correction to make the update.

When somebody discovers a "work around" (e.g. turn off device control), the perceived need for corrrection is deminished unless the Indian support department is threatening to quit en mass due to the abuse they are forced to endure from pass-thru users.

The software update committee may or may not respond to body count in the Indian support ranks. They have other demands as well. Even if the fix may only take 6 lines of code.

Just a day in the life...

Only specific models supported this feature , and most newer models are missleading in the manuals , showing it is possible in the diagrams .

Newer cameras had this removed to prevent them from being used to transfer vhs directly to the pc in one go , an attempt to prevent piracy of copywrite protected materials .

We have a sony here , crap software , and this is the information I found on many sites ...
