DVCD stands for Double VCD. Basically the bitrate is lowered so that you can fit almost the double amount of movie on one CD. These are also called LVCD's (Longplaying) or XVCD's (X standing for extended in the form that the bitrate is lower/higher than the normal standard). It has also been said that DVCD stands for double density (tracks are nearer together) - sofar I have seen/read no proof for this asumption.

  3. Not quite sure what the "D" in DVCD stands for but they are definitely on-spec VCDs (that is, NORMAL bitrate).

They fit more video on it by a mastering trick where the spiral track of the CD are placed closer together. They work on many/most players depending on the quality of the drive. Usually, these discs are no longer than 90 or so minutes.

Obviously, you cannot MAKE these yourself unless you own a CD presser.

These are not double densite discs like the new Sony media.

  4. are you talking about the new 99 min CD-Rs..i believe only 2 cd-rw drives can burn these completely to the end with no problem...

i believe one made by LG and other made by mitsumi...but don't quote me on that...

vitualis is right...they basically took what they did with the 74 min CD-R=>80 min CD-R and made 1 step further to put the spirals even closer together than the 80 min CD-Rs to make the 99 min ones...
