    Isn't HD-DVD supposed to be 30GB capacity.

I guess we'll be seeing single layer and dual layer in High Defs just as we do with current dvds.

The 30GB is for commercial/pre-recorded discs; the recordable (HDDVD-R) is 15GB.

Which basically mean for backing up HD-DVD, you'll need to compress it.

Dual-Layer HD-DVD-R would be too expensive as it would need a much stronger laser than single laser. 15 GB is very weak, though, so the recording race will definitely see Blu-ray as the winner with 25/50 GB single/dual-layer recordable discs probably from the very start.

What is your logic saying that dual layer BR needs a less expensive laser?

It all depends on the cost. If Blue Ray discs cost more than HD-DVD, then it will not be the winner. Look at current dvd prices, dual layer discs are still expensive compared to single layer, so they aren't that popular.

Until prices fall to a reasonable level, people will be holding off these new formats.

Yes, but the article states "Optical disc makers Hitachi Maxell Ltd. and Mitsubishi Kagaku said they will market the new HD-DVD-R discs next spring, when Toshiba plans to launch HD-DVD recorders. - whereas a commercial Blu-ray recorder has a proposed release about of at least a year away

EDIT- I just realized that Sony has a commercial Blu-Ray recorder available in Japan (about $3800 USD), but I haven't heard of any world-wide release dates.
