I want to put this in an external case. Is this hdd ok for externals, and what type of case would I need?

Get a BYTECC enclosure from newegg.com they have many different ones to choose from. I would suggest you get the aluminum cases which does better in cooling than a plastic one. Do you want a USB or FIREWIRE enclosure? Or you could get one that has both.

For the price, it's OK. It appears to be a ATA 100 drive, but in an external case wouldn't make much difference.

I like Firewire external cases, but many have luck with USB 2.0, though I never did. You would need a Firewire card and cable with a Firewire external box, though. Of course you would need USB 2.0 in your computer or a add-on card with a USB box. USB 1 won't work fast enough.

I have both USB2.0 and firewire. But prefer usb2.0 for this ext so it will work with my laptop as well. So the census is that the Western Digital 80GB WD800JBRTL UATA100 will work with the SABRENT SBT-EKU35 Aluminum 3.5" USB2.0 External Enclosure?

Yuh, for some reason the ADAPTEC USB 2.0 enclosures will not work with my XP pc. It will only work with my W2k pc's. But my Firewire enclosures work with both.

Denver that enclosure would be okay. The BYTECC brand doesn't interest you?

the drive/case is actually for my gf's brother who is at West Point. He just wants a small external case to store is mp3s on. I found him that 80gb WD for $20, and I have used this sabrent case with my external on an xp, and thought it was fine, plus it is super small and cheap. I do appreciate the bytecc advise, because I myself do have 2 of them as well, but the sabrent should do him fine. Thanks again for the help......
