  1. I've done a search on here but havent found any answers.

My problem is that i have a vob and when playback, i have video but no audio. In Gspot, there is no information (n/a i get) except in the directshow render bit which says that the audio path is - (S) --> MPEG-2 Splitter --> InterVideo Audio Decoder --> (R)

does this mean i need a intervideo audio decoder codec?

I have looked in audio codecs installed in Gspot and there IS a intervideo audio decoder. So i dont know what i need.

i've only tried playback in wmp10. I cant use intervideo windvd as it asks me to install directx 9.0, which i cant as its messed up my system.

    help appreciated

VOBs aren't meant to be played - they are (or where) part of a DVD Video, and not a stand alone file format, as so many seem to think. That some software plays some VOB files is another story.

That's pretty strange. I thought the VOBs were where the audio and video was stored and that the other files just told the DVD player how to play them.

All of my PC DVD players will play a VOB file and VirtualDubMod and VirtualDub MPEG-2 will both edit the files and save them as AVI or Frameserve them to programs that will handle MPEG-2 and AC3. The problem is that there are multiple VOBs in a DVD and you can't seek with the PC player to get to the next VOB. If you open the VIDEO_TS.IFO then the player will play all the VOBs as one complete movie.

I have seen where if you don't add a dummy AUDIO_TS folder along with your VIDEO_TS folder that some authoring programs will not add the audio to the DVD. This could be the case with these VOBs.

Well, I see it like the VCD .dat file, not meant to be played directly but using hardware/software players that play [i]the disc[/] as a disc. VOBs were born as parts of a whole (the container for video, audio and subtitles) - the "whole" being a video DVD.

Right but since both VOBs and .dat files hold the audio and video of the movie, they can be viewed and if you want to edit the movie, then those are the files that you would edit.

The original poster wanted to know why he wasn't getting audio from his VOBs but like alot of posters lately, they either don't follow up or they refuse to give any details and we are left to only assume or to argue amongst ourselves what their problems could be or about something that has nothing to do with their problem.

I'm starting to get the feeling that I shouldn't respond to any posts unless more information is given.

Try the latest GSpot beta version (2.52 I think ?)

    Reads MPEG files properly.

Yep, essentially you're both agreeing with one another here - that it is intended that you'll use the IFO file to control the playback. However, that's not to say that you can't just double-click any VOB and get it to play. It will work/play, but it is intended/preferred to use the IFO file for "proper" playback.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I don't know what to think, Gremlin. All of my VOBs are MPEG2_VIDEO / DOLBY_AC3. I can't tell what the audio is with the page covering it up (MPEG2_AUDIO ?). I would think that any windows player would be able to play it.

Have you tried opening the file in VirtualDub MPEG-2 or VirtualdubMod?

If you don't want to install DirectX 9 then you might try using Media Player Classic 6.4. I don't use any Windows Media Player newer than Mplayer2 (6.4). Media Player Classic will play DVDs.

  11. get vobedit and demux the audio

if you do that, you'll see what a vob file is, the you'll understand how it works, and what is meant by "was not supposed to be played"

sure it works on some players, but not all.

That's a NTSC VCD mpeg authored as DVD you got there. Should be played by most software and hardware players.
