I don't know if this is considered a no no or not but I frequently make backups of movies that I buy that I like to share with my mom in a different city. I have always just sent her a copy in the mail, but is it possible to just send the ISO file from DVDShrink in a email my mom could just burn? I tried just putting it in an email attachment but it says "some files are missing or could not be found".

So is this possible and if so what is the easiest way for me to send and my mom to deal with at her end? Thanks!

  2. It is possible, but would take bloody ages even over broadband because of the size of the file. It certainly is unlikey to go via e-mail.

It would also be illegal - the whole issue of making a backup copy for yourself is a grey area at the best of times, but running off a copy for someone else is a bad and naughty thing. Go to your room !

Well I had to ask! I'll go back to my room.

  4. This is so easy. Do you know anything about FTP? Set up a FTP server on your computer and send your mom an account and pw.

  5. ... which would of course still be illegal.

    And bloody time consuming.

  6. Actually lending a backup to anyone is akin to piracy. I believe it was discussed in many threads that backup is for self use only.

The border is not clearly marked and it depends upon the authorities how they interprete it. You can of course lend the original to any one as long as you own it. This is the official interpretation IMHO. But then again who is going to know.

However if you create an FTP server so that someone (your mom or whoever) can download it, there is more chance of discovery and that it very much illegal.

Okay guys I guess you answered my questions, I didn't mean to potentially get myself or anyone else in trouble on this website by asking this. I honestly didn't know it was even considered illegal to loan my mom a copy of a dvd I purchased whereas loaning her my original was not, so now I know. Thanks for enlightning me!
