I have a sony digital handycam connected to my computer with a firewire. The capture with WINDV seems to go all the way to the end of the home movie but , in playback in Windows media there is only 19 minutes. I tried longer tapes but still only seem to be getting 19 minutes. Thanks for your help.

You haven't filled out your computer specs, but are you capturing to a FAT32 drive? If you're running XP or 2000, you can overcome its 4GB limit, which is about 19 min. of DV-AVI, by converting your drive to NTFS.

Use software that can split the captured video to several files under 4GB, like Scenalyzer.

As well, I believe Ulead VideoStudio 5.0 and later also work around the 4GB file limitation inherent in Windows, by automatically writing a new file once the 4GB limit is exceeded. VideoStudio will link these files together while making the whole process transparent to the end user.

WinDV can be setup to capture multiple files (based on timecode and or number of frames). Check the "config" button (I'm away from my video machine to try it, so just going from memory here...)

If you have an Athlon 64 3000 and 1 Gig of RAM why are you using ME? If you change to Windows 2000 or XP, you can convert your drives to NTFS and this will no longer be an issue. Your machine is easily capable of running the later (and better, general consensus is that ME is the OS Microsoft would rather forget) operating systems.

    Hello,

I don't have XP and right now I just don't want to pay $300 for it. I was thinking I should wait for XP64 and maybe then change.
I do have XP that a friend gave me but of course she installed it on hers too many times I guess so now it can't be activated anymore.

I managed to transfer all my 8mm tapes to my computer using InterVideo
    Win DVD Creator 2.

It was a piece of cake. No problem with size or anything. One might actually have thought I knew what I was doing.

My next thing is to Burn it to DVD. I did a trial one using Nero. I just put it on the computer and burned the mpeg without doing anything else. It played fine in my DVD.

Would it be better to encode it or change it to mpeg 2 ?

What if anything would give a better picture?

    Thanks for everything.

If you search at tigerdirect or on pricegrabber.com, you can find an OEM version of XP Pro for about $140 - $160, which is a lot cheaper than $300.

XP64 doesn't have the driver suport yet for many apps, especailly video apps. ( I have a 3000+ Athlon 64 )
