I usually back up only the main feature using DVDShrink on to a single layer DVD-R disk. However, if the main movie has to to be compressed to less than 70%, I use the old freeware version of DVDFab to split it into two disks. The problem is this often produces disks that are out of compliance, according to Nero. It will burn them with the warning that they may not be playable.
I've also tried to load the files that DVDfab produces into DVDShrink so I could make an iso for DVDDecrypter to burn. It doesn't like them either and won't even load them into the program. So far all the movies I've backed up this way have played fine on my DVD player, but I'd feel better if I was producing disks that weren't potentially problematic. I know that I could use DVDSrhink to reathor and split the main feature only into two disks, but I figure if I'm going to use up two disks I might as well get the extra material too.
I was wondering if there if an easy alternative to DVDFab out there to splitting an entire DVD in two. I've read a how-two guide on doing it with VobBlanker, but this seemed a bit involved. I'd prefer a freeware tool, but if the newer versions of DVDFab work better, I'd be willing to buy it.

IFOEdit works for this. You could also try and get your hands on a copy of DVDXCopy... I'm not sure of the quality of that though (not freeware either). You could also change your personal viewing quality standard and just accept that DVD-9 are going to not look as good on a DVD-R. I've compressed movies as much as 55% and have noticed very little quality loss on a standard definition TV. I guess I just don't like the alternative of backing up to two discs.

I would rather let DVD Rebuilder chug away through the night than get up and change disks, if at all possible (Lawrence of Arabia and the extended LOTR series are an exception).
I certainly wouldn't use a transcoder like Shrink (and definately not DVDxCopy) for higher compression, but a reencode with something like CCE or Procoder (or even HCenc) using DVD Rebuilder might brint you back to single disk satisfaction.Read my blog here.
