  1. Ok, I am trying to burn anime fansubs to DVD so i can watch them on my DVD player, not only my computer....and also so i can free up space on my hard drive. I have tried almost every how-to I found that was related and even tried the 'Anime to DVD' how-to that is posted here: https://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?guideid=675&howtoselect=4;10#675 but nothing has worked quite right. I followed that guide exactly, but it still would cut off the very top and bottom of the video, thus cutting out half of the subtitles. I searched the board, and tried using VirtualDubMod to resize the video by adding bars to the sides because of the "overscan" of TVs, but still it cuts off the top and bottom of the video. Most of the threads don't say what specific settings to use. Can someone please tell me what I need to do and what programs to use so that I can watch my anime on a DVD? I have TMPGEnc, MPEG-VCR, VirtualDubMod, DVDLab and Nero..and my DVD Burner is a Pacific Digital 16X Double Layer DVD+-R/+-RW. Those are the programs I have used to try and do it right...but to no avail.

I'd appreciate it if someone could help me out...I am so frustrated and tired of "making coasters" that I'm almost thinking of throwing my DVD-Writer and all my blank DVD+Rs out the window.

You need to resize and add the black bars at the top and bottom, not just the sides. Usually about 16 pixels all round should do. If this still cuts off some of the subs, maybe your TV has more overscan than normal, so you need to add wider borders.

I'm assuming the anime vids start off as either AVI or OGM.

Bugster is correct - you need to size them up to 720x480 (or 352x480, depending on the original size), resample the audio, AND make sure that you've included overscan. Remember - the TOTAL must be 720x480, INCLUDING overscan. So the VIDEO will be like 688x448, with 16pixels of overscan on every side to bring the total to 720x480. If you need more, add more.

  4. Yes, the files are .avi. I'll try encoding and resizing to 688X448, then adding 16 pixels to the sides, top, and bottom and see if it works out allright. I'll let you know if it does, that way it will be helpful to others.

  5. Thanks to you guys who helped me out, it really helped me and I can finally see all of the subtitles and have it play on my DVD Player and TV. Ok, I used VirtualDubMod and resized the video to 688X448 and letterboxed it up to 720X480 and it pretty much worked with the 16 pixel bar on each side...tho for my TV, I'm thinking I may need like 20 pixels for it to be just perfect. I do have a question tho, how do I keep the qualtiy of the video high? I just resized it and compressed it in VirtualDubMod then burned it to DVD using Nero, but the picture quality wasn't as good as when I had used TMPGEnc and DVDLab. When I resize in VirtDubMod and compress, should I compress with the same codec as the original .avi file was using, or should I decode first, then resize with VirtualDubMod, then compress and then use TMPGEnc to go MPEG2, then convert to DVD with DVDLab? Or should I be able to just compress with my resized settings in VirtualDubMod, then convert with TMPGEnc and burn to DVD? What I'm basically wanting to know is how to keep the video quality very high?

  6. Set up the resize filter in virtualdub, the frameserve this tmpgenc. If you don't know how to fraeserve from virtualdub, there is aguide on how to do this in the guides section, take a look. By doing this oyu do not have to re-encode to another avi in vdub, simply resize then encode to Tmpgenc.

If course, you can do all this just in tmpgenc. On the advanced settings tab, set Video arrange method as center, custom size, and this will do what you need.
