Today I went to a local Best Buy and for the first time saw 10-pack spindles of Verbatim DVD+R DL. They are still made in Singapore, just like the jewel-cased ones. The price was $59.99, so it's not too bad for retail and is actually cheaper per disc than from Meritline or Rima.

I didn't get any because I have enough for now. I was doing a lot of 110% price-matching from Staples lately. I tell them that CompUSA has 3-packs for $19.99, so Staples always gave me a 110% price-match. And they are much closer to me than CompUSA. So I save on gas and end up also paying less for DL discs . I know I could get them cheaper online (Buy.com), but often I'm willing to pay a little more to have the stuff right away.

Also at Best Buy saw Fuji DVD+R DL 3-packs Made in Taiwan. Anybody knows who makes them? Could it be Ritek or maybe Ricoh (Ricoh I wouldn't mind trying). Though they were very expensive @ $29.99.

I bought a 3-pack of the Fuji DL disks at Best Buy, mainly just to find out who makes them. They only had one pack and there was no price on the shelf. It turned out to be $29.99, which is quite high, but I was willing to pay it once to see if they might be something other than Ritek. The pack I got is made by Ricoh. I burned one and it works fine. It only burns at 2.4x on my Pioneer 108. Verbatims burn at 4x.

The price was high, and I wouldn't buy any more at that price, but it's good to finally see more manufacturers making DL disks. More competition should lead to lower prices.

Mawdryn, thanks for the info. I might give Fuji/Ricoh a try then, just for the heck of it. I want to see if it's as compatible as Verbatim DL on some of my players that dislike Ritek DL's. 8)

Yes, but those are made by Ritek, and they are not nearly as compatible with various devices as Verbatim DL's are. That's why I wanted to try Fuji (Mawdryn says they are Ricoh) to see how they compare in compatibility to Verbatims.

DVD+R DL is getting cheaper, at least in retail stores. Just 4 months ago you had to pay about $12 per disc (Verbatims). And now you can get them for $6. I think that's a good progress in such a short time.
