I am considering a few different DVD-ROMs, any opinions?
I've looked at Sony DDU-1621 and Toshiba SD-M1612.
Are these any good and what others are recommended?
Thanks

Personally, I prefer the Lite-On LTD-163(16x DVD, 48x CD-ROM). I can rip 300 minutes in ~12-15 minutes. It also has firmware updates to make the drive region free and it costs less than the Pioneer DVD-116.

The LiteOn is a very good drive and is cheap.
If you're looking for another choice, http://www.storagereview.com ranks the Artec drive (also a very inexpensive drive) as one of the best. -
Hi,
I gotta go also with the LiteOn LTD-163 as it's 100% CloneCD compatible and one of the fastest rippers in the world.
Cheers. -

Thats true, but there are firmware updates on the net that let you go beyond that.
I only dream in black & white...

I'm with the Pioneer, hasn't disappointed me yet, but i'd defenetly consider a Lite-On drive as well, in the last year they have improved their compatibility, and have great support.
But in NO way should you even consider drives from Sony or Toshiba, piece of junk and no amount of firmware will help.

Ok, so the favorites are Lite-On LTD-163 or LTD-165 and a Pioneer DVD-116? How do these compare against each other? Does either of these support CD+G?
What about region coding -- can the firmware be patched in either of these drives to make them region-free? And if so, what happens with RCE coded discs like The Patriot? -
Well, I can't speak of the Lite-On cause I don't have one, but the Pioneer supports CD-G, and it also have a Region Free firmware available for downloading on the net.
