  1. Can the DVP642 playback a PAL disc on an NTSC TV? How does the result look? Is there risk of damage to the TV?

  3. I had some trouble at first with a PAL DVD. All I needed to do was to set the DVP642 video settings to NTSC (from System Menu). It played fine afterwards.

The player will convert PAL to NTSC output if you set the TV output to NTSC in setup menu. That will make it convert everything it plays to NTSC. A word of warning - this player doesn't scale to NTSC but chops off lines to get the output to NTSC standards. I confirmed this by playing a Chinese PAL VCD which is pan and scan and has English subtitles at the bottom of the image. The subtitles were almost completely cut off when watching with this player. If you are watching non-subtitled video, you may not notice. If you are watching anything that is letterboxed, the player will cut off some of the black border, so there's no problem there.
