Anyone know what resolution Dish and DirectTV broadcast. I'm sure they compress the signal too much to fit more channels on a satilite. I can see on my DISH system great variation fom channel to channel. They do seem to transmit a pretty good picture on the Pay-per-view channels, but the others vary greatly.

No clue what the rez is but yeah its way compressed. I see macro blocks all the time on mine. My friends think I'm crazy, but I finally got some of them to see some on the grass field of a football game.

just eyeballin' it, i happen to see directv & dish on an almost daily basis on arge hdtv's..

while they are both not acceptable in terms of quality for hdtv (not counting HD channels), i would say that most dish network channels look better than directv channels.

when it comes to HD, i cant really tell a difference.. granted it is true HD and not upconverted crap.

  4. If I remember right when they came out with the mini dish systems they advertised about 425 lines. The reason the channels vary so much is because alot of them originate from a c-band signal, that's why you can see little black and white sparklies in the picture sometimes. I've had a c-band satellite for over a decade, they are analog and the picture quality can vary alot from channel to channel. There are also alot more of those sparklies in the picture during the summer than there are during the winter when it's cooler.

I gotta tell ya, I think that it ain't bad for what it is. (Dish that is) I have made a few cop...er back...er a pir...er ah I mean educational experiments from the set up that I have, and while I may have ended up with some slightly off tint (my bad I assume) samples, the resolution looks just as good as I was hoping for. (no noticable difference at about eight feet on a 27" boob tube) I do admit that I do get the occasional white specks and such (I don't think that it is the output causing it though, but rather something on my end). Nothing so bad as to deem the shows unwatchable except the tint always seems off a bit, again not so bad that it is unwatchable, but definitly enough to remind me that I am still an amature.
IS IT SUPPOSED TO SMOKE LIKE THAT?

  7. At one point Dish look like crap next to DTV then Dish sent down a software update and dish has a better picture now. Dish uses AMD chipset and I think has MPEG2 on a flash rom on the mother board to have updates down the road.
