hello, i just wanna ask anyone to help to my problem with my SATA drive.
i am using pentium 4 2.0 ghz, ASUS P4V800-X motherboard , 768 ram ddr. and 80 gb IDE (master) and 80 gb SATA (slave) . when i had my SATA drive the technician could not formatted it until he does on NTFS file system, the problem now is it cannot be formatted in SATA drive altough a command appears when it iis on P.O.S.T. instructing the steps to configure it SATA but it cannot be done as the cursur to set it to don't go through , and when i opened the VIA RAID and SATA diagnostic tools (the tools built in for my motherboard intended for RAID and SATA). it says that drive (SATA) are not in array position which means it is only a NTFS system the same as my IDE which is set as master. and the other thing was, i can't use this drive (SATA) for a long time work, infact when it is plugged and used in just 8 hrs. it cannot be accessed and causing my systems hang up . so i need to unplugged it for me to continued my works.

first i don't have a clue wth you mean when u say you have ide master and sata as slave, you cann't have a ide drive and a sata on the same cable therefore there wouldn't be any slaves.
next u cann't put a different file system on a drive if u cann't format it.
what u need to do is go and by partitionmagic that will help makin formating and changing file systems very easy...but u don't sound like u have a clue what your doing so im not sure if that would be a good idea or not.
last u cann't put a ide drive and a sata drive into any raid configueration!! -

Adding a case fan to blow on the drive or mounting the drive in a HD cooler (which fits into a 5.25" bay) would likely solve the above problem.
A tower type case should have fans blowing in the lower front, and blowing out the top back (if there is a place, adding an addional fan to blow out hot air is a good idea if only the powersupply fan is blowing out the back).

Now, onto the next part. SATA and IDE drives are run by seperate controllers. SATA devices do not have "master" or "slave" settings. Each SATA port can handle one SATA device.
Question: Are you using Windows98/ME, Windows 2000 or XP?Does Windows detect the new SATA drive (does it show in "My Computer")?
Windows 2000 & XP have a Disk Manager that can be used to partition and format hard drives. If the disk is shown in windows, you just need to partition it (choose file system) and format it.

when i had my SATA drive the technician could not formatted it until he does on NTFS file system, the problem now is it cannot be formatted in SATA drive
Info on partitioning and formatting:
There are 2 basic steps in preping a drive for being used. [1] Parition the drive (how you want the drive divided, for example, into 2 sections. Lets say they are assigned the following - E: (40GB) and F: (40GB). Because these partions are greater than 32GB, they must be created with the NTFS file system.
Step [2] is to format the partion(s) to create the file system to hold data.

If I am understanding this correctly, during boot-up you are prompted to press a key or key combination (such as ctrl-f) to enter the RAID setup. This option should only be used if you want to create a RAID array (multiple drives that act like one big drive). There are several different versions of RAID which are beyond the scope of this discussion.

Lastly, I seem to recall something about not being able to mix IDE and SATA drives *unless* the SATA drive is set as the boot drive (the drive with windows installed on it). I do not recall where I read this (mabey I just imagined it...). Perhaps this is what you mean when you talk about "master " and "slave?"Some people say dog is mans best friend. I say that man is dog's best slave... At least that is what my dogs think. -
hellbringer,
What i'm trying to say is that the SATA cable was built on motherboard and the IDE has it's on cable of course, this is why i can plugged them to my pc . the IDE cable is connected with my hard disk together with my cdrom, and the built in SATA which has 2 socket and i had only used the one which was connected to my SATA drive.

yes i am using windows xp sp2. and also atx tower case with 2 auxilliary fan mounted inside , of course the windows detect my SATA drive but when i used it and when it reach an approximate 8 hrs. it becomes unusable meaning it will unplugged and all the files store on that drive become inaccessible and could not detected anymore by windows .sometimes it cause my systems to hang up this why i need to unplugged the drive mechanically inorder to stabilized my systems because if i don't my systems becomes unstable . and also i need to know what is the array disk ,and what is the mirroring, it's advantages and disadvatages. and how to make an array, mirror, and how to configuring them.
