  1. Please help me understand someone,

a HD upconverting dvd player plays standard definition DVD's but up-convert them to high definition resolutions.

But isn't this the same as taking a standard Mpeg/avi file and upscaling it to HD resolutions? I dont' see how you can get more "qaulity" from doing this. I mean you can't make qaulity which isn't there. Are these units using some new technology that can't be duplicated via software? And if it is possible how would one do this?

The reason I'm asking is that I tried to take a dvd and upscale it to HD resolutions. The end resulted looked worse than the original dvd. So i'm baffled at how HD converting dvd players work to make up the non-exsistent information. Espeically since the output on HD looks pretty damn impressive.

Yep, it is about the same as upscaling on your computer. You can't get better image quality but you can make it "look better" with some sharpening and some filters if you play it on a huge screen like with a projector.

I'm using ffdshow and upscales when I view using my projector see http://htpcnews.com/main.php?id=ffdshowdvd_1

  3. Is there a step by step guide for upscaling? I'm assuming that you would use virtualdub right? Or is there a better software that yields better results? I can go commerical if needed. But what order do you use the filters in? Thanks

Depends on the quality of the software and processing power. some will be better than others.

The new Denon DVD-5910/A1VX is the worlds first consumer product to use the new Realta Teranex HQV chip which is based on the pro Teranex system priced at USD$60,000+ the chip itself peforms more than 1Trillion operations per second, true 10-bit processing, and is capable of 1080i & 1080p. The Teranex system is used by broadcast stations for HD broadcast and hollywood studios to convert SD movies to HD for the new HD formats

    see it here: http://www.siliconoptix.com/home.cfm

    cheers

  6. i did follow Baldrick's lin. But it looks like he's post processing the video when it's being played. I want the sharpening + upscaling to be part of the file.

The question is can FFDshow's filters be applied when you are encoding the file? From what I can tell (when I was looking at ffdshow) most of the filters that baldrick used in his guide was on the decoder and not the encoder end of FFDSHOW.
