  1. I am helping my father in law with some 8mm transfer work. He found a transfer box that works great with my video camera. With the cameras video out it is videoed right into the in on my Sony DVD recorder for perfect viewing and recording. Works awesome. I have a DVD+RW of his footage so far and since there was no sound, I had the idea to voice over some stuff. Alot of the people in the film are long gone and having him with his personal comments and personal knowledge over the film would make the perfect touch. I have a few programs on my computer that offer a voice over by microphone. My current dilema is that I used the DVD Decrytper to get the data from the DVD to the computer. So how do you change the VOB files into more recognizable files on my programs like Pinnacle that I have. Ant help or suggestions would really be appreciated. I looked around the site, but might have missed the needed info.

Use VOBmerge 2.5 to merge all the VOB files into one big VOB file. Then, use VOBedit to demux only the video (M2V) part. After that, it's simply a matter of watching the video to time out where certain scenes show up ... and creating an audio file (WAV) to match up with the scenes. And of course, timewise, the WAV file has to be the same length as the M2V file. Lots of WAV file recorders out there to choose from that will do this. I use TotalRecorder ($12).

After you have the WAV file created, use ffmpegGUI to change it into an AC3 file. Then use DVDauthorGUI to combine the AC3 file and M2V file, authoring it back into VOB/IFO/BUP files you can burn to a DVD.

Here are multiple methods to obtain an MPEG2 file from your VOB. (Select the one that works best for you.) Good Luck!

Creating One Large VOB from DVD using DVD Decrypter:

    1. Insert DVD and start DVD Decrypter.
    2. Click Tools/Settings/IFO Mode Tab.
    3. In the File Splitting Option select NONE, then click OK.
    4. Click Mode/IFO.
    5. Click the Input Tab and you will see the Program(s) & Chapter(s).
    6. Select the Program you wish to rip.
    7. Choose your Destination and Rip. (May take a fe minutes.)

Creating an MPEG2 file from a VOB:

    1. Insert DVD and start TMPGEnc DVD Author.
    2. Click Create New Project."
    3. Click Add DVD Video, locate the VOB and click Next.
    4. Now you'll be prompted to copy the clip data to a destination on your HDD.
    5. Click Okay. (The result will be an MPEG2 file in the location you chose in step 4.)

    OR

Demuxing Audio & Video from VOB files on DVD using DVD Decrypter:

    1. Insert DVD and start DVD Decrypter.
    2. Click Mode/IFO.
    3. In the Input Tab select the Program & Chapter(s) you want to demux.
    4. Click the Stream Processing Tab, and tick Enable Stream Processing.
    5. Tick the Video Stream & Audio Stream boxes, then make sure the the Audio Stream is highlighted.
    6. Select Demux.
    7. Choose your Destination and Rip. (May take a few minutes.)

Demuxing Audio & Video from VOB files on your Hard Drive using Rejig:

    1. Start Rejig.
    2. Select File Mode.
    3. Under Job List, click ADD, then choose the file(s) you wish to demux. When ready, click DONE.
    4. Under Stream List & Demuxing, highlight MPEG video Stream.
    5. Name your Output file.
    6. Click Demux. (May take a few minutes.)
    7. Repeat steps 4, 5, & 6 for your Audio Stream. (NOTE: If the Audio Stream is AC3, be sure to tick Fix & Correct AC3 Delay before clicking Demux.)

Remuxing Audio & Video to MPEG2 (VBR) using TMPGEnc:

    1. Start TMPGEnc. (If the WIZARD opens, then close it.)
    2. Click Files/MPEG TOOLS.
    3. Select the Simple Multiplex Tab.
    4. In the "Type" pulldown, select MPEG-2 Program (VBR).
    5. Locate the elementary Audio & Video Streams.
    6. Name your Output file.
    7. Click Run. (In a moment or two you'll have your file.)

Other people may have other ideas using the same (or different) tools, but this is what always works best for me. (If I missed a step or two, I'm sure you'll figure it out.)

  5. Video boxes are terrible. Before you put the 8mm film away forever, take a large cardboard box, Spray paint the inside flat black. Hang a piece of white heavy matt photo paper on one end. Project the projector onto the phot paper about 2 1/2 to 3 ft from the screen, so it is 6-10 inches in diam. Film this with the camcorder snug up against the projector. I have used 2 transfer boxes. The result cannot even come close to doing this simple telecine process. Sell that piece of junk on Ebay. I got my info and tried it AND IT WORKED from

They also do frame by frame transfers but I could not afford that. I am in the poor house, but had access to a good camera.

    - it seems Epicurus8a has taught everything...Yes, you can demux (demultiplex) your VOB file with the excellent TMPGEnc or you can even try renaming its extension from .VOB to .mpg. Have you already tried that?
