  2. On this regular topic, it would help to know why you want to do this, because , if all you want to do is buy dvd's in a format other than your own country and watch them-simple answer, get a dvd player that will play both ntsc/pal and output in your home broadcast standard, and can be or already is region free.

If there is another reason, eg: you wish to copy the dvd's (Naughty Naughty) amd send the copies to a friend/relative in different broadcast standard country- then more complicated as you have to have a way of converting the files on your dvd, and you will lose the menus.

The simplest method/cheapest of doing this is procoder express software for which you have to have a dvd burner on your computer and a good enough computer to do it-again menus lost.

Or if you wish to go this option:-

Burn or get someone to burn a stripped of region and macrovision copy for you(Mind you if the can do that pay the $75.00 for Procoder express software and use that), however we digress:-

Get a dvd player/recorder which outputs in your "foreign" format, a dvd recorder which records in the "Foreign" format, and connect the two together, suggested models are:-

    Philips 727/642 player
    Philips dvd recorder
RJ Tech(And numerous clones eg: Curtis)
    Daytek(Sold by Costco in Canada).

I think this is the subject that get asked the most about, and there is plenty of smoke and mirrors ways of doing it but for the non-enthusiast these method are the simplest, or as I have offered many times, send the dvd to me.

I'll do it for free on a one off basis. as I know how frustrating this is is for the non-techie, and we cannot all be a genius, I can't draw for instance, I have a ruler and it still gives me a wiggly line.

There's no point converting NTSC to PAL. I've not found a PAL DVD player yet that can't play NTSC DVDs.

I own one. It plays NTSC DVD, but slightly jerky.

  5. Hi Folks,
Region 2 DVD players, by definition, must support NTSC because Japan, an NTSC country is part of Region 2. If playback is jerky that is because the DVD player is sending a PAL signal from an NTSC DVD to a PAL TV. You have to manually switch the signal on the DVD player and/or to NTSC for it to play properly. Many older PAL TVs (5 years and older) cannot handle NTSC or even PAL60 a quasi standard where PAL colors are used but NTSC frequency is displayed.
So basically the point is, your PAL player DOES support NTSC but probably your TV does not.

I'd go as far as admiting that it doesn't do NTSC to PAL conversion properly. But as there is no way to set the player to do anything else (=keep it as NTSC), I dare say it doesn't support NTSC DVD. What my TV supports, I don't know, as all it's ever been fed is PAL.

Yet another confusion of TV systems and DVD region protection. They are not related at all. To avoid switching region on your DVD player (which, if it's not region free, you are only allowed to do a set # of times) just rip your DVD with DVDDecrypter (or DVDShrink) which will default to create a backup with no region code protection.
