  1. I'm using Mpeg streamclip to convert some vob files into dv to bring into iMovie. Of course, it looks as though I need to pay anf get Apple's Mpeg2 playback plug-in. I would have though paying for QT pro would get me this, but I was wrong. My question to you highly intellegent group of video wizards is this: Do I really need this or am I missing something? Also, if I buy it will it be obsolete with Tiger and QT 7? (in case you happen to know, 'cause I certainly don't).

Thanks in advance for your help.

I highly doubt it will be obsolete due to the future updates.

Not obsolete, but it seems likely that anyone who buys QuickTime Pro 6 now would have to pay full price for QuickTime Pro 7 when it's released. But maybe Apple won't charge for the QT7-compatible MPEG-2 component they've already bought it for QT6.

Yes, they did this once before. Either 4->5 or 5->6, I can't recall.

I think SERBIAN's MPEG2WORKS site has a product that will do this for you, MPEG2->MOV. $10 - half the price of QuickTime MPEG-2, and the QuickTime MPEG-2 support does not fully allow for transcoding of MPEG-2.
    Similar to their MPEG-1 implementation.

It was 5 to 6, but the underlying architecture
( READ: DRM) had changed, and as part of the
MPEG standards group, Apple had to comply.

As standards change, Apple has to along with it.
Will we have to buy the new component for QT 7,
    if standards change, possibly.

    But unless something
changes drastically on the front end, say an update
to FCP, DVDSP or even Compressor, you might
not EVEN NEED TO upgrade your setup to QT 7,
which ( all things point to) you will also have to upgrade to
    Tiger to get.
