  2. I was never a big AVI fan, but it sounds like either something has happened to your codec or the AVI in question is needs a codec you don't have installed on your machine.

From my understanding there's tons of choice codec's that AVI's can require to be played and sometimes finding the right one for that right AVI can be a hunt/peck.

  3. Maybe try to reinstall your codec?

Use AVIcodec or Gspot to see which codec is needed. They should tell you if you have it. If they are XVID or DIVX, then you may have a problem with ffdshow.

I would also download VLC media player. It uses it's own codecs and should play most anything. WMP is not a very good player, IMO.

Same problem with ALL (yeah you read right ALL) my Avi video files.
I have remove & reinstaled all codecs that I need.

This strange happening hit me in the same periood like watty252.

I even try to play files burned on cd, five years ago and again ALL of them starting with an error mesage "The file is corrupt" in all players that yester months used to play that files. I checked avi files with gspot and virtual dub and they not contain any errors. I have this files from years ago. I have a well mantained database, and size of the files wasn't modified by any virus or something like that.

There is no problem with my files or codecs.... what else could be ????
I'm not a novice in dealing with avi files encoding and stuff...

In Bsplayer 1.02 build 812 ,14sep 2004 for example after the error message "File is corupted! seeking will be very slow!" i hit the "ok" button,
the avi plays ok, even the seeking working with no problem.
Some of the files (especially with mp3 soundtrack) won't play the sound but image is ok also the seeking.
There are some other programs who not work with my avi files like subtitleworksop, SnatchIt! Video Thumbnail Maker, Wmp (don't play the file at all) and others.....

With virtualdub and virtualdubmod there is no problem manipulating the files, also avipreview have no problem viewing the files (it's it job, finally).

I REPEAT THE FILES ARE NOT CORRUPTED..... I have all codecs that I need to play the avi files

    What is wrong ???

Something in my registry, some missing system files or what ???
    Any Ideeas

    Thanks anyway

    P.S. Escuse my bad english

Could be corrupted registry entries for DirectX.

The main dll used by DirectX for playback seems to be quartz.dll. Try reregistering this file by going to Start>Run, and type regsvr32 quartz.dll

Glad it took care of the problem

I had similar problems, it seems that installing/uninstalling certain codecs breaks the filter connections in DirectShow (which uses the quartz.dll file.) Even a reinstall of DirectX doesn't solve it, but reregistering the dll seems to fix the filter connections again. That's my take on it anyway
