Hello
here is a buzz i found today:
http://everythingapple.blogspot.com/2005/03/chud-tools-reveal-apples-970mp-quad.html
if the next or soon G5s end up with this chip, will it matter for recording and manipulating movie files?
I thought Id ask here as this seems to be the savy movie area
I have a G4dual1gz. if AlchemyDVR is recording a file (sorensen3) then I can't really use other 'movie' programs to manipulate other movie files as Alchemy uses '105%' of a processor. it will skip frames If the machine is ding someting else, like batch poceessing QT files or processing MPEG2 files with Streamclip.
will these programs need to be re writen to use 4 processors? QT/Streamclip/iMovie/iDVD?
what are the greoups thoughts on this.
thanks rotut

Othrwise, they will be primarily sold to non-consumer markets, and us lowly mortals will be stuck with just dual core processors
( a single 2.5, a Dual 2.75 and finally a dual 3.0 ghz G5 mac
will be most likely at WWDC 2005). -
It shoul matter even without rewrite. OSX can assign different tasks (programs/threads) to different processors (cores), even if software itself isn't MP capable. Rewrite might be needed to say, for Compressor to use all Altivec-units from different cores, when Compressor (GUI etc) itself is running on separate core.
Original G4 had only one Altivec. Later had (as current ones still have) two Altivecs. So, it's possible that Compressor and other programs scale nicely, even without major redesign. Two Altivec G4s have existed more than four years.
