I have made several very nice back ups in the Xvid format, using only one cd, 700mb. I am happy with it anyway. Just for the sake of testing, I tried it at 350mb, from an original dvd. I didn't see much difference. I used AutoGK. Very nice tool, for someone like me. I would like to know if there is a simple way to convert my 700mb Xvid file to half the size, to keep it on a note book pc. I have noticed this is difficult if not impossible to do from a back up dvd. At least for me, anyway. My original is lost. And that is the reason I want to convert a burned 700mb Xvid to 350mb.

Get Dr. DivX and use that to do it to the 700MB XviD's you already have. The end result will be DivX format instead of XviD and you'll be severely compromising the quality as well, but for a simple solution I can't think of anything easier.
AutoGK is designed to work only with files ripped from DVD in a special way whereas Dr. DivX will take video files in almost any format and convert them easily. -
And as a DVD is much better source material than a 700 MB XviD, your reencoded 350 MB XviD/DivX will look much worse than if you'd encoded the DVD to 350 MB in the first place.

It all depends on whether you can your hands on the original DVDs again or not. -

DRP - Youn hit the nail on the head. True, 350 mb file isn't as sharp as the 700mb file, but good enough for viewing on the road. Thanks for your responses.

Does half d1 alter file size at all or is it just how the bitrate is used?
