  1. Hi,
I have a contact in Scandinavia that is going to send me video...but when I asked her about sending it to me in AVI format she said that it isn't used much in Scandinavia. Here when you capture it off the tape its in DV AVI, Is there a different format in different countries?

Since she didn't have the AVI format I wanted she said that she had it in MPEG, Quick Time and on DVD. If I have to choose one of the these format which one is going to give me better quality? All the other videos I am taking clips from (using adobe) are AVI files and look great. When I convert my movie for DVD (and into a internet acceptable format), will there be a noticeable difference in quality?

    Thanks so much, Carla

This format is determined by the source and the capture method. It is DV avi if you get the video from a DV camera and transfer it via firewire. Other formats are available with other capture methods

What is the source of the video coming from your contact. Maybe the person just needs to learn how to 'tranfser' it from the camera into DV avi format using firewire.

Your other problem may be PAL/NTSC. Scandinavia will be PAL format, what do you use where you are?

  7. Just a wondering?

Are you going to view it on your computer or on a standalone DVD/TV?

If not it should not matter if it is PAL or NTSC since the computer can show both, the only time you will have any problems are when you try to view it on any standalone equiment.

The only problem you might run into when viewing on a computer is that you do not have the codecs needed to view it, but that can be sorted by downloading the needed ones (check tools or links to the left of the screen).

if you get on DVD then you can run it in your computer (if you have a DVD reader and a player installed) but probably not in a standalone palyer since it seems as if nearly all players in the US are only NTSC and when they can do PAL you run into problems with the TV-set insted.

  8. The video is going to be going out all over the world. So I will have to make one copy thats NTSC and one thats Pal. Coaches will need to be able to show it on a DVD player as well as on a computer for a LCD projector. I didn't even think about that part of it till you asked about it. Thanks for bringing up that point

  9. That would be the best way to do it, but if you are a bit lazy you could just make a NTSC version since 99.99% of all PAL standalone players can do that do (the reverse however is NOT the case). Still the initiall conversion from PAL to NTSC can still be a pain in the butt. But since this is a video forum there are numerous threads about this in the forum.

Just another reflection: Your contact told you that AVI isn't used so much in Scandinavia, That is NOT true except for people working on Apple computers (then the natural choise would be Quick Time, I think). As I live in Scandinavia I should know what is going on here.

  10. Thank you so much for clearing that up....It didn't sound right to me that they wouldn't use such a widely known file extention. She did say that the person who handles the videos was gone on vacation so maybe I can wait till that person gets back to ask them.
