I thought this would be fun (and maybe a good topic starter) to share...

What's your opinion? Were dragons real or not?

This could be said of God, Atlantis, the Loch Ness Monster/Ogopogo, and quite a few other things too

    Hello,

It's like the arkeoptryics - (excuse the spelling) - the creature taht was thought to be bird and dinosaur but was found out to be faked. Actually it was a new breed of bird...

I'm sure its based on some kind of bones that have been found everywhere that lead to the creation of similar myths....

And also - regardless of how the myths were created they are a part of heritage (everyone). You can't diminish they're signifance whether or not they're real - people BELIEVE and that's all thats needed (or at least they have - just like the LOCH NESS monster as mentioned earlier).

MYTHS are what spur the imagination and are part of the human experience....

I think dragons were the few remaining dinosaurs or large lizards that inhabited Europe at the time. It's possible that a few smaller species of dinosaurs may have survived the extinction. People in that era weren't as educated as us. Hell, they thought wood contained the "fire element," which is why it burned. Metal did not contain the "fire element," so it didn't burn.

    Medieval person + giant lizard/dinosaur = Dragons.

Ok I can't even believe that.....

There'd be a lot more definitive evidence we could find if they were around in the 1100's....

Now prehistoric times 100,000 years ago..... there COULD be some kind of odd creature we don't know about - I mean look at the wooly mammoth. But not anything in "ad" times.....

mammoths were still around untill about 2000BC (and some reports say up to 500AD on an isolated island in siberia)

For instance, Wrangel Island canada , in the Arctic Ocean off the coast of Siberia, had a population of pygmy mammoths as late as 1000-2000 BCE. The USA Channel Islands had mammoths until about 10-13,000 years ago ...

Miniture elephants also lived in greece and around the med ... not that long ago http://www.cq.rm.cnr.it/elephants2001/pdf/402_406.pdf

much of "dragon" lore was simply finding dino bones around -- dino bones were thought to be the work of the devil in much of europe (by the church) , but everyone really knew they were dragons ...

There's no reason a small population of dinosaurs could not have survived the cataclysm that wiped the majority of them out.

Recent findings support a theory that dinosaurs and modern man coexisted in Africa. This was in BC times.

We thought the coelacanth was extinct, but they're alive and well in African waters.

There is absolutely no way to tell exactly how and when the dinosaurs were wiped out. It's highly unlikely that each and every dinosaur spontaneously dropped dead at the same instant. Whether it be a comet crashing to Earth or global climate change, it's most likely that they slowly died over a period of years. I'm not saying that dragons were definitely dinosaurs, but it is a possibility.

The culture of medieval society was also prone to story telling and embellishment. They didn't have tvs, so they played music and told stories. Practically anything that they didn't understand was dismissed as the devil's work or some kind of magic. It wouldn't take long for the sighting of a single strange beast to turn into a story about a "dragon."

Again, I'm not saying that dragons were absolutely dinosaurs, just a possibility. Europe may have been populated with some species of giant lizard or giant bird.

We know less about the world 1,000 years ago, than we do know.
