  3. Look over to the left and hit the link that says DVD Players. This will tell you all that you want to know. I use it all the time to find out if my friends DVD players will play VCD, SVCD, ect.

What I'm asking is for the best (I've looked). I mean is there one everyone wants but they think is to expensive? I'm willing to spend upwards (maximum) of 1,000 dollars (U.S.), but I want to know what can play mostly anything like CD-R audio CD's, VCDs, SVCDs, XSVCDs, etc. Can you point me to the model etc.?

pioneer dv-444 is in my opinion the best single disk player, $200. Or if you want a changer, the pioneer dc-603, around $250.

  9. Currently the best player is the Pioneer series - it's the most flexible and has a much better picture than Apex

I use the Pioneer DV-343 and it's played everything I've thrown at it -- I've read the 434 and 444 are also as good.
